Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about decimal conversions, accuracy, and formulas.
01How do you convert binary to decimal?▼
To convert binary to decimal, multiply each binary digit (bit) by 2 raised to the power of its position (counting from right to left starting at 0 for the integer part), then sum all results. For example: 1101₂ = (1 × 2³) + (1 × 2²) + (0 × 2¹) + (1 × 2⁰) = 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 13₁₀.
02How do you convert fractional binary bits (e.g. 0.101)?▼
Fractional binary digits use negative powers of 2 starting immediately after the radix point: the first digit is 2⁻¹ (0.5), second is 2⁻² (0.25), third is 2⁻³ (0.125), and so on. For example: 0.101₂ = (1 × 0.5) + (0 × 0.25) + (1 × 0.125) = 0.625₁₀ (or 5/8).
03What is the maximum decimal value of an 8-bit binary number?▼
An unsigned 8-bit binary number with all 1s (11111111₂) equals 255 (2⁸ - 1). A signed 8-bit two's complement integer ranges from -128 to +127.
