Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about decimal conversions, accuracy, and formulas.
01How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?▼
To convert any fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number) using long division. For example, for 3/8: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. If the fraction is a mixed number (such as 2 3/4), first convert it to an improper fraction (11/4) or calculate 2 + (3 ÷ 4) = 2.75.
02What is a repeating decimal and how is it identified?▼
A repeating decimal (recurring decimal) is a decimal fraction whose digits repeat endlessly in periodic cycles (e.g. 1/3 = 0.3333... or 1/7 = 0.142857142857...). A fraction produces a terminating decimal only if its simplified denominator has prime factors of only 2 and/or 5. If any other prime factor exists (like 3, 7, 11), the decimal repeats infinitely.
03How do you turn a mixed number fraction into a decimal?▼
Keep the whole number as the integer portion before the decimal point, then divide the fractional numerator by its denominator. Add the two values together: for 5 1/8, calculate 5 + (1 ÷ 8) = 5 + 0.125 = 5.125.
